Renovation Meets Conservation

This historic warehouse on the edge of Portland's Old Port is now a showcase for advanced building and design.  UPDATE - the residential portion of the building has recently been certified Platinum (the highest rating) by the US Green Building Council's LEED for Homes program.

The new exterior

Featuring a very air-tight and well-insulated shell, triple-glazed windows, a photovoltaic solar collector, and a "green roof" to both absorb run-off and moderate building temperatures, the building will operate at a fraction of its former energy use. The occupant, owner and architect, (Rick Renner of Richard Renner Architects, one of Maine's pre-eminent "green design" firms), has made use of every available inch in this challenging building, and engineered many creative solutions to keeping the building warm, dry and comfortable. Rick has raised the bar for what "green remodeling" can achieve.
